Overview of SMTP
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) is the protocol used to deliver E-mail through the internet.  By default outgoing E-mail servers use the SMTP protocol on port 25.  Due to all of the spam issues on the internet, Internet Service Providers (ISP) have defended their users from being victims of malicious spam attacks by restricting port 25 to only use their SMTP servers.  As an example, if you use an AT&T DSL connection at your home or office you will not be able to use your own E-mail server outgoing address (mail.yourdomain.com) on port 25 because it will be rejected unless you use their outgoing address (smpt.att.yahoo.com).  Many users will simply configure their E-mail clients to accept mail from their own domain but use their ISP outgoing server to send mail.  In most cases this will work, however, you will find yourself getting rejected by recipients when sending E-mail in some cases and the reason is that the spam protection architectures on their end will perform reverse DNS look-ups (PTR) on the IP address that your mail was sent from.  When the recipient's server performs a look-up on the IP of your outgoing server it must match the domain of your E-mail address otherwise it is rejected and marked as spam.
